Place of Weathers / Ort der Witterungen, Macura Magazin / Museum, Stari Banovci and Novi Banovci

In September 2022, during a stay at the Goethe Morph* Festival, Reykjavik, The House of The Deadly Doris, which housed a 1980s West-Berlin post-punk archive1, disbanded, becoming part of history. From the perspective of a cultural historian, its director Dr. An Paenhuysen was quite pleased with this transition. It was probably no coincidence that the dissolution into history took place on the volcanic island of Iceland. Both volcanoes and archives are not dead, but they are not really alive either: only active from time to time.
In 2023, archive and volcano will meet again during a research residency at the Muzej and Magacin Macura. For this encounter, An Paenhuysen (always with the archive in the pocket) will collaborate with the artist Lucie Strecker (Vienna) and Cose Cosmiche (Helga Franza and Silvia Hell, Milan).
Lucie Strecker is an artistic researcher in the field of micro-performativity, which pays attention to the smallest organic contexts. Cose Cosmiche is a collective/place/catalyst/curatorial project that reflects on space, time, energy, matter and emptiness. In 2022, it organised the first edition of the
Volcanic Attitude Festival on the Aeolian Islands.
The Magacin Macura in Stari Banovci is located at the Danube, and, more in particular, at a spot where different weatherings meet, called “Das Ort der Witterungen”. Even on a calm day, you can perceive a slight breeze at the Magacin Macura. Similar to a volcano, a continuous pressure is present at this spot where various weatherings meet. Sometimes, residents of Stari Banovci sit at the spot, convinced that it has a healing effect on the body.
The Muzej Macura at Novi Banovci is located a little further along the Danube and has set itself the task of preserving, studying and exhibiting the art-historical objects from the collection of its founder, Vladimir Veljko Macura. The museum archives documents, letters, photos, magazines, artists’ books, drawings, sketches of artistic movements such as Zenith, Dada, Constructivism, Surrealism – the precursors of 1970s and 80s punk.
Artists have long been regarded as kind of seismographs, who are the first to feel what is happening in society. Artists themselves also produce certain vibrations in the sense that they
make our perception of reality tremble slightly.

1 The House of Deadly Doris functioned as an art space from 1987 to 1991. Afterwards, it turned into a
storage of Deadly Doris’ art works and its 1980s West-Berlin archive. The House reopened on 14 July 2019
under the direction of An Paenhuysen, who organised and rearranged the archive in collaboration with
Wolfgang Müller, the founder of the post-punk artist collective The Deadly Doris (1980-1987). Using the
short and intimate format of “eventualities”, An Paenhuysen reactivated the archive material in various
contexts in Berlin. See https://dashausdertoedlichendoris.de/

Since 2011, Cose Cosmiche is a collective/place/catalyst/curatorial project where artists, scientists and researchers from different disciplines are called to present a reflection, a thought on space, time, energy, matter, void, to define the universe in which we live and propose new forms, ideas and theories to represent and explain the world. Cose Cosmiche is curated by Helga Franza and Silvia Hell. In 2015, Cose Cosmiche launched Les Sublimes Archive, an online archive that collects notebooks by authors from different disciplines. The archive is inspired by the utopia of the Parisian “Sublime” (1870) and an attitude of deceleration, slowing down and sharing ideas. In 2015, they launched a new project, the Conferenza Passeggiando, a collective action that takes its participants on a journey-conference, inviting researchers across different fields to speak and “expose” while walking. In 2016, they launched the George microzine editorial project, a pocket fanzine whose first issue is dedicated to the weapons that make “escape” revolutionary. Since 2017 they have been organising the Senseless Residency Programme at the Arthur Cravan Foundation in Milan and from 2022 the Hypersenseless Residency Programme. In 2022, Cose Cosmiche launched Volcanic Attitude, a festival of contemporary culture between Naples and the Aeolian Islands.
